Oilfield Glossary

The oil industry has a language all its own. Below are a few definitions of commonly used terms. These definitions are from Schlumberger's Oilfield Glossary. Click here to access their fully searchable comprehensive glossary.  


BOPD or Barrels Of Oil Per Day (noun)
A common unit of measurement for volume of crude oil. The volume of a barrel is equivalent to 42 US gallons.

Flow Back or Flowback (noun)
The process of allowing fluids to flow from the well following a treatment, either in preparation for a subsequent phase of treatment or in preparation for cleanup and returning the well to production.

Spud (verb)
To start the well drilling process by removing rock, dirt and other sedimentary material with the drill bit.

TD or Total Depth (noun)
The planned end of the well, measured by the length of pipe required to reach the bottom.
