Mathis 29-17H-1 - Initial Production Report

Posted by bernell on April 10, 2015

The EnCana Mathis 29-17H-1 has the second longest lateral in the TMS and began producing on February 2, 2015.  This well is located just north of the EnCana 29-32H-1, located on the southern border of Amite County, adjacent to Louisiana.  It is also located just south of the EnCana Anderson 17H-1 well, one of the oldest and most successful wells drilled by EnCana in the TMS.

This well produced 22,677 barrels of oil in its first 27 days.  Interestingly, at day 9, the official test day, only 696 barrels were produced, meaning the well likely peaked around 1,500 barrels of oil per day.

I've contended that a longer lateral doesn't necessarily mean initial production will be much if any greater, but that the production will drop more slowly.  Over time it will be interesting to watch this well and the EnCana Lawson 25-13H-1, the longest TMS lateral well, which is just now coming online.

If these two wells do good and the other longer lateral wells offer similar positive results, is it possible we see longer laterals in the future?  Will EnCana look to having two or even four section units rather than the 1 1/2 or 3 section units that we currently see permitted?

Only time will tell.
